Understand more about Rectal Prolapse:
Rectal prolapse is a painless protrusion of the rectum through the anus. Procidentia is complete prolapse of the entire thickness of the rectum.

Symptoms and Signs:
The most prominent symptom of rectal prolapse and procidentia is protrusion. It may only occur while straining or while walking or standing. Rectal bleeding can occur, and incontinence is frequent. Pain is uncommon unless incarceration or significant prolapse occurs.

Treatment:
Thiersch Repair, tightening of the sphincter muscles.
The Thiersch, or sling, the procedure uses synthetic materials to create a perianal sling to support the rectum. It has a success rate of about 90%. This procedure is a good choice for children since it can be done with self-absorbing sutures to provide temporary relief of symptoms until the base pathology is managed. It is considered a palliative procedure since it does not cure the prolapse itself. In adults, it is associated with high recurrence rates.
